Lighthouse leaving Grand Passage Canada Day 3- Aug 13 - Long Island-to-Annapolis Royale: After a restful stay in the Island Mist Cottage on Long Island, we were prepared to go Whale Watching via the infamous Pirates Cove Whale Tours operation from Teaverton. Here, we pass the lighthouse in Teaverton on the way out to the Bay of Fundy.

Aboard the flagship of Pirates Cove Whale Tours. We snagged the aft starboard quarter of the whale watching boat. Its actually a converted fishing boat with a single diesel engine. being aft, we throve (past tense of "thrive") in the spent diesel fumes for two hours out and two hours back. Aboard the Aft Starboard Quarter

The Humpback Broaching The elusive Humpback Whale in the wild. This one was apparently moving northeast (up into the bay) at quite a slow pace. Slow enough to ensure all the whale tours could catch up to it in the two hour trip for at least a few days. We saw it blow several times. It submerged and then reemerged about 20 feet from where it went down.

My guess is that it was anchored to the bottom. I think uour boat as well as the one in the picture just "happened" across it by dumb luck. This reduces the number of guaranteed repeat trips they have to give out if we don't see a whale. Humpback with other Thrill Seekers

Whale Watching Bat One of the most exciting wildlife events of the trips was the emergence of this bat. It came out of something dark on the boat. It flew around and over the water. But its sonar suggested little to eat or land on, so it kept coming back to the boat. This time, it landed on my bride's leg. She didn't know it until I mentioned its presence (after I snapped this photo). She was surprised.

Our day ended here in Annapolis Royale, about a two hour drive from Teaverton. It was nice to arrive in time for a stroll around the historic town and a tour of the Royal Fortress. These cannons guard the convergence of the river into the Bay. As I understand, no real battles were waged here as it was too well defended. Cannons at Annapolis Royale
