Rainy Lunenburg Canada Day 2 - Aug 12 - Lunenberg-to-Long Island: Woke up in the Wheelhouse Inn to a very rainy day in Lunenburg. No whale watching from here. We even tried to take a photo from the golf course for our own brochure. No luck. Especially with our snapshot digital.

Jettin' across the island to the other side - we heard that the fog lifted over near the Bay of Fundy, near Digby, the Scallop Capital of Nova Scotia. Here, we were guaranteed to see a whale. But first, we had to navigate Digby Neck. Blitz Across the Island

Old Boat in Shelburne Once we arrived on Long Island and found our cottage, we went back to see Balancing Rock, shown in all the brochures. The sign describes a bit about the perils and dangers presented by this trail.

Here, Junior blazes the traile through the natural gravel and mud trail. She's quite a trail walker, keeping her Adidas mud free, while her Mom inadvertantly submerged her open toe, leather berkensteins ankle deep in the peat bogs. Girls taking in Shelburne History

Paths around the Ovens Following the flats, we got to the verticals. This trail went down a few hundred steps, most of which were covered with green, wet moss. This sign warns hikers to avoid the Russian dancers.

Here's my wife looking at the balancing rock. The rock was about 15' tall. The brochures made it look about 100' since the pictures were taken before this last deck was attached within about 10' of the rock itself. An Oven

Family Love After Balancing Rock, we went to Flour Cove. This is a rocky shoal abutting the ocean. The cove is ringed by greazy seaweed goo, so its hard to get to the water for a swim. The local rags relate a story of a whale being washed up here and the heroics by the locals to get rid of it.

Greazy goo which rings the cove. It also floats everywhere around the island. It stinks when its hot and probably when its cold. An Oven

Old Captain's House Traffic control on the west end of the island. Actually, the province funded road repairs for six of the twenty or so total miles of road on the Digby Neck.

Honey pie and Junior riding the ferry crossing the Grand Crossing between Long Island and Brier Island. This ferry joins Freeport on Long Island with Westport on Brier Island Lunenburg Restaurants

Lunenburg Transportation This is how they park the boats in Westport. Westport has a total of about one mile of highway.

From one end of the road, there was this little break between Brier and a little island. This is a fishing boat going out in the fog. There was a fog horn honking on that little island. All the boats had radar, mostly Furunos. Postcard Foder

Sunset in Lunenburg Harbor This is the "Captain Joshua Slocum" ferry, that goes over Grand Passage. Here, it's parked at Freeport, waiting for about 20 minutes for enough cars to take the 3 minute trip to Westport.

Here's Lavena's Catch Cafe in Freeport. Its one of three restaurants on the island and the only one that serves non-fried seafood. It was pretty nice, though we had to wait for a while for our reservation. That's when we went to Brier. Drawn and Thirded
