Canada Day 1 - Aug 11 - Yarmouth-to-Lunenberg: Following our restful stay at the Best Western, we get our first view of an official Canadian Government building - this is the post office, eh. We bought stamps here. The clerk asked us how long we were staying. I guess we wear our Stars and Stripes on our sleeves. |
Here, we turn off the massive Canadian Superhighway two laner into the main road into Shelburne. Shelburne was where the English loyalists who found themselves stuck in the nacent United States went to continue their allegiance to the crown. | ![]() |

Rustic (or rusty) old boat in Shelburne. Apparently used by the English Loyalists. |
Here are Ma and Junior taking in some exciting history down near the water in Shelburne. BTW, Shelburne was used twice by Hollywood to film movies set in the 18th century. They had to bury wires so astute cinemaphiles wouldn't note the temporal anomoly. | ![]() |

Here they are again, this time on the ancient paths leading to the "Ovens," a group of coastal caves dotted along the coast between Shelburne and Lunenburg. |
This is an oven. Its a spot in the coastal shale that has been beaten in so badly that a cave is made. Tom Hanks and Wilson lived in one of these things when he was a Castaway in the movie of the same name. | ![]() |

Three little Jellyfish swimming about inside one of the ovens. Tom didn't have to contend with these as his oven was dry. |

Here's one of those classic Ship's Captain's houses I've always seen in the movies. This one is in downtown Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. |
From out on a pier looking in on the quaint little tourist haven of Lunenburg. It took me a while to say it right. I thought it was Luenburg. It finally took my wife a few impatient retorts of "Its Lunenburg!!!" before I got it. Even then, I had to say it to myself to ensure that I would not get lambasted for my innocent ignorance. | ![]() |

Honey pie and Junior walking the streets. Note the coincidental presense of a horse drawn carriage in my photo. |
These are some of the buildings that uniquely characterize Lunenburg. Most of the pictures are taken on clear days from teh golf course (see below). But you'll always see these red and blue buildings in Lunenburg tourist brochures. | ![]() |

Sunset in Lunenburg casts long shadows over the boats moored in the harbor. The golf course is across the harbor. We were going to go out to see whales from here, but it rained the next day. So we canceled and headed to Digby, where the real whales hang. |
Maine is known for Lobsters. Maine is right across the bay from Nova Scotia. So NS is known for lobsters too. But in Nova Scotia, they call them Lobster Dinners, not Lobster. Here is one drawn and quarterd (head, tail, left hand and right hand). It wasn't a bargain. | ![]() |

Junior trying not to laugh at one of her pop's hillariously funny comments about lobsters. We were going to have dinner in the red building behind her right shoulder. But, it was too hawty tawty and I didn't think we'd get the food volume per dollar I was pursuing. So, much to Jr.'s embarassment, we jetted and went to this place. |
During dinner on the porch, it started raining lightly - just enough to create this little rainbow. It was pretty cool. Our body fronts ddidn't get wet as we had an umbrella over our table. Our backs moistened slightly. | ![]() |
